결혼에 대하여 - 칼릴 지브란(Kahlil Gibran) 예언자(The Prophet, 1923) 중 Then Almitra spoke again and said, "And what of Marriage, master?" And he answered saying: ​그러자 알미트라는 또 다시 물었다.  "그러면 스승이여, 결혼이란 무엇입니까?" 그는 대답했다. You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. 그대들은 함께 태어났으며, 또 영원히 함께 있으리라. 죽음의 흰 날개가 그대들의 생애를 흩어 사라지게 할 때까지 함께 있으리라. 아, 그대들은 함께 있으리라. 신의 말 없는 기억 속에서까지도. 허나 그대들의 공존에는 거리를 두라. 천공의 바람이 그대들 사이에서 춤추도록. Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of the lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. 서로 사랑하라. 허나 사랑에 속박되지는 말라. 차라리 그대들 영혼의 기슭 사이엔 출렁이는 바다를 놓아두라. 서로의 잔으로 나누어 채울 지언정, 하나의 잔으로 마시지는 말라. 빵을 쪼개어 먹을지언정, 똑같은 크기로 나누려 하지는 말라. 함께 노래하고 춤추며 즐거워하되, 그대들 각자는 고독하게 하라. 비록 하나의 음악을 울릴지라도 저마다 외로운 기타 줄들처럼. ​ Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow. 서로 가슴을 나누라, 허나 간직하지는 말라. 오직 삶의 손길만이 그대들 가슴을 붙잡을 수 있다. 함께 서 있으라, 허나 너무 가까이 서 있지는 말라. 사원의 기둥들도 서로 떨어져 서 있는 것을. 참나무와 사이프러스나무도 서로의 그늘 속에선 자랄 수 없다.
