The Tower of Babel(바벨탑)
1. Now the whole world had one lan - guage and a common speech.
온 땅의 구음이 하나이요 언어가 하나이었더라.
2. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
이에 그들이 동방으로 옮기다가 시날 평지를 만나 거기 거하고
3. They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of
stone, and tar for mortar.
서로 말하되, 자 벽돌을 만들어 견고히 굽자 하고 이에 벽돌로 돌을 대신하며 역청으로 진흙을 대신하고
4. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heav - ens, so that we
may make a name for our- selves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
또 말하되 자, 성과 대(臺)를 쌓아 대 꼭대기를 하늘에 닿게 하여 우리 이름을 내고 온 지면에 흩어짐을 면하자 하였더니
5. But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
여호와께서 인생들의 쌓는 성과 대를 보시려고 강림하셨더라.
6. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they
plan to do will be impossi- ble for them.
여호와께서 가라사대 이 무리가 한 족속이요 언어도 하나이므로 이같이 시작하였으니 이후로는 그 경영하는 일을 금지
할 수 없으리로다'
7. Come, let us go down and con- fuse their language so they will not under- stand each other."
자, 우리가 내려가서 거기서 그들의 언어를 혼잡케 하여 그들로 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자 하시고
8. So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으신고로 그들이 성 쌓기를 그쳤더라.
9. That is why it was called Babel- because there the LORD confused the lan- guage of the whole world.
From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
그러므로 그 이름을 바벨이라 하니 이는 여호와께서 거기서 온 땅의 언어를 혼잡케 하셨음이라 여호와께서
거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨더라.
From Shem to Abram(셈에서 아브람까지)
10. This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the
father of Arphaxad.
셈의 후예는 이러 하니라 셈은 일백세 곧 홍수 후 이년에 아르박삿을 낳았고
11. And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had oth-er sons and daughters
아르박삿을 낳은 후에 오백 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
12. When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he be- came the father of Shelah.
아르박삿은 삼십오 세에 셀라를 낳았고
13. And after he be- came the father of Shelah, Arohaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
셀라를 낳은 후에 사백삼 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
14. When Shelah had lived 30 years, he be- came the father of Eber.
셀라는 삼십 세에 에벨을 낳았고
15. And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
에벨을 낳은 후에 사백삼 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
16. When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
에벨은 삼십사 세에 벨렉을 낳았고
17. And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
벨렉을 낳은 후에 사백삼십 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
18. When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.
벨렉은 삼십 세에 르우를 낳았고
19. And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
르우를 낳은 후에 이백구 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
20. When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.
르우는 삼십이 세에 스룩을 낳았고
21. And after he became the father of Serug, Peu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
스룩을 낳은 후에 이백칠 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
22. When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.
스룩은 삼십 세에 나홀을 낳았고
23. And after he became the father of Nahol, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
나홀을 낳은 후에 이백 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
24. When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.
나홀은 이십구 세에 데라를 낳았고
25. And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
데라를 낳은 후에 일백십구 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
26. After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
데라는 칠십 세에 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았더라
27. This the account of Terah.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
데라의 후예는 이러하니라 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았고 하란은 롯을 낳았으며
28. While his father Terah was still alive, Ha- ran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.
하란은 그 아비 데라보다 먼저 본토(本土) 갈대아 우르에서 죽었더라
29. Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's
wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.
아브란과 나홀이 장가들었으니 아브람의 아내 이름은 사래며 나홀의 아내 이름은 밀가니 하란의 딸이요 하란은 밀가의
아비며 또 이스가의 아비더라
30. Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.
사래는 잉태하지 못하므로 자식이 없었더라
31. Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter- in- law Sarai, the wife of his son
Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran,
they settled there.
데라가 그 아들 아브람과 하란의 아들 그 손자 롯과 그 자부 아브람의 아내 사래를 데리고
갈대아 우르에서 떠나 가나안 땅에서 가고자 하더니 하란에 이르러 거기 거하였으며
32. Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
데라는 이백오 세를 향수하고 하란에서 죽었더라
Human ambition(인간의 야망)
인간은 야망을 가진 존재로서, 누구나 높이 올라가고 또 성공하기를 원한다.
심지어 인간은 자신들을 만드신 창조주 하나님을 섬기는 대신, 그분과도 경쟁하려고 든다.
이것이 바로 태초에 아담과 하와의 죄이며, 그 후 바벨탑을 쌓은 인간들의 죄이다.
하지만 그런 교만한 야망은 언제나 예외 없이 하나님 앞에서 허무하게 무너져 내렸다.
